We conducted qualitative research and ethnographic immersion with women and adolescent girls from communities surrounding Satipo to understand their aspirations, skills, everyday realities and the barriers they faced not only in developing emerging fashion and garment-making activities, but also financial skills and access to markets.
By spending time within the communities and exploring how production, learning, family life and informal enterprise intersected, the research sought to identify practical opportunities to strengthen their capabilities and support the development of more viable and sustainable livelihood pathways. The work placed women’s and girls’ perspectives at the centre of understanding how an early-stage, community-based activity could evolve into greater economic opportunity.
